Experimental Evaluation of Frequency Characteristics of Heartbeat Detection Accuracy in Microwave Biosensor

(in English) In recent years, studies on heart rate detection radars have been conducted to realize non-contact vital sign sensing. However, none of the existing studies have experimentally evaluated the frequency dependence of heart rate detection accuracy under fair conditions from low microwave to millimeter wave. Therefore, this paper investigates and studies the effects of the radio frequency on the accuracy of heart rate detection. Specifically, this paper describes the quantitative evaluation results of the accuracy of heart rate detection during resting breathing in a wide range of frequency bands from 2 GHz to 40 GHz. In addition, two demodulation methods are used in heart rate detection. Two different demodulation methods are used to avoid the bias in heart rate detection accuracy due to the algorithms across a wide range of frequencies so that the characteristics of the demodulation method do not affect the final evaluation. The experiment results showed that both demodulation methods have similar heart rate errors in most subjects, with no significant degradation differences over the tested frequencies. In other words, no frequency dependence in the accuracy of heart rate detection was observed in the frequency range from 2 GHz to 40 GHz.
