Recently, underwater optical wireless communication has been attracting attention because of its ability to achieve higher throughput than conventional underwater acoustic communication. Due to the short communication distance in underwater optical wireless communication, an underwater optical wireless network is composed of multiple relay nodes. In an underwater optical wireless network, data collected by sensors are forwarded to a relay node and delivered to a sink node via multiple relay nodes.
In such a system, the location of the relay nodes has a significant impact on the communication performance. In this paper, we formulate the relay node placement problem as an optimization problem and propose a placement method using a genetic algorithm. In the proposed method, the placement position of relay nodes is considered as a gene. Once the relay node locations are determined, the optimization problem becomes a mixed integer programming problem, and the value of the objective function can be obtained using a solver. The objective function obtained by the solver is then used as the goodness of fit to determine the appropriate location of the relay nodes. Simulation experiments show that the proposed method enables efficient data transfer. |
