Practical Implementation of DDoS Detection and Mitigation Techniques Using JA3 Fingerprinting

(in English) Application layer DDoS attacks such as HTTPS floods has been difficult to distinguish from legitimate traffic because parameters in HTTP headers are falsified, making it difficult to appropriately block only attack traffic. This report focuses on JA3 fingerprints, proposes a mechanism to detect and mitigate against HTTPS flood attacks based on JA3, and evaluates the effectiveness of the detection and mitigate mechanism in our SOC practical environment. From the results, while we demonstrate its effectiveness in many HTTPS flood attacks, we turn out that it does not work when attacker randomizes the order of extensions on TLS ClientHello to evade JA3 fingerprint. In this case, a considerable amount of traffic is generated from a single IP address, and it is a sufficient defense with the conventional rate limiting defense. Furthermore, this method is expected to be effective on its own for JA4 fingerprints, which are resistant to randomization. By using both JA3 and JA4 fingerprints, which will be increasingly implemented in security products,this method will be more effective.
