Electric sliding contact mechanisms play an important role in various electrical devices, such as brushes/slip rings (or commutators) in generators and electric motors, trolley wires/pantographs and brushes/current collectors in electric railways. Among these, the market for generators is increasing due to the expansion of electric power facilities worldwide.
In this study, we conducted sliding current tests under high current conditions using a steel slip ring and copper graphite brush with molybdenum disulfide, which are attracting attention as materials for slip rings in turbine generators that are becoming larger and are used in electric railways.
Experiments were conducted at different current densities (0~60 A/cm2),and the wear characteristics were examined based on the contact voltage drop, wear amount, surface temperature, brush/ring roughness, and surface analysis results after the experiment.
The results of the experiment showed that the brushes containing molybdenum disulfide tended to increase brush wear and surface roughness, but they also had the effect of reducing the roughness of the ring surface. |
