We have previously proposed a waveband granularity routing node named flexible waveband routing node that combines low-port-count wavelength selective switches and high-port-count optical matrix switches. The number of wavebands was uniform for all nodes in our previous study so as to highlight the dependency of routing performance on the waveband number. As the node-by-node selection of node types and the number of wavebands can be possible, we focus on this optimization problem. However, this problem is extremely complex due to the vast search space and the optimality of each node configuration can only be evaluated numerically. Thus, it is difficult to find simple mathematical formulations or apply exhaustive search methods. In this paper, we propose a novel network architecture that consists of conventional nodes and flexible waveband routing nodes with non-uniform numbers of wavebands. Furthermore, we present a network design method based on genetic algorithm that optimizes the node type and the number of wavebands. Numerical simulations demonstrated that the proposed networks can minimize network costs in all scenarios, compared to networks composed solely of conventional nodes or flexible waveband routing nodes with the same number of wavebands. |
