This study explored whether displaying the profile icons of various Twitter users has an impact on a user’s awareness of potential readers. We developed a hypothetical interface for posting statements to Twitter, which displays the profile icons of Twitter users. Information about the relationship with the user, close follower, non-close follower, friend of a follower and non-follower, is included at the top of the icon. We measured participants’ awareness of readers when posting statements to a hypothetical Twitter account under two experimental conditions: one was the icon condition, in which posting tasks were performed on the proposed interface that included profile icons, and the other was the control condition, in which posting tasks were performed on a blank screen. Results demonstrated that, unexpectedly, participants under the icon condition were less aware of potential readers, especially non-close followers than those under the control condition. We will discuss these results from the standpoint of human information processing |
