Miscommunication often occurs in conversation, in which contents of the verbally (mis)conveyed message have been of interest and investigated as far. However, how the speakers’ recognition differs in nonverbal dimensions of conversation (e.g., perceived speed of conversation) remains unclear. Because video call is predicted to foster such the gap due to the physical distance between the camera and display that results in the reduced eye contact with each other, this study investigated miscommunication in nonverbal dimensions of conversation on video call, manipulating the camera position and its on/off. Perceived speed of conversation differed between speakers especially when the camera was on compared to when the camera was off. These results suggest that video call can convey more information including visual information, but at the same time that it unexpectedly can uncover miscommunication in nonverbal dimensions of conversation. |
