A voltage meter based on electric field energy harvesting technology will be proposed in this paper. The measurement of voltage on a power transmission cable using commercially available voltage meters has limitations. Usually direct contact to the conductor and a reference to ground are needed for such measurements. This paper presents a system utilizing a copper sheet wrapped on the insulator of a cable to extract energy from ac electric field generated by the cable. Based on the power extracted by the sheet, the exact voltage on the cable can be calculated. Compared with conventional voltage meter techniques, the proposed system does not require direct contact between the voltage meter and the cable. In addition, the harvested energy can be utilized to power a wireless sensor network in the Smart Grid. Theoretical calculations and experimental demonstrations are presented to prove the concept. Measurement results show that the proposed voltage meter with a 30 cm long wrapped copper sheet has achieved over 99% accuracy when the ac power line voltage varies from 0 to 250V. 1.3 mW power has been harvested when the voltage on the cable is 220 V, which is sufficient for many sensor nodes in the Smart Grid. |
