We propose a new Japanese electronic text format with stepped-baseline to improve reading speed. The new stepped-baseline text format has stepwise baseline to each phrase segment and breaks a line between phrases. We measured reading speeds and eye movements using both the new text format and a conventional text format of normal straight-baseline. The reading speed for the new stepped-baseline text format is about 11% faster compared to the conventional straight-baseline text format. The number of fixations in the stepped-baseline formats is less than the number of fixations in the straight-baseline formats, and it seems to be caused by the reduction of number of extra fixations by regression and the expansion of fixation position intervals.
