Evaluation of facial impressions with partial changes in shape around the eyes and mouth

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) A famous proverb states that the “eyes are more eloquent than the mouth”, but what exactly do the eyes and the mouth tell? In the present study, we examined the effects of partially changing the shape of a woman’s face around the eyes and mouth on facial impressions. First, we prepared a digital image of a female face as a standard reference, and then we constructed three digital images of faces with age-related changes in shape around the eyes or mouth. These four digital-face images were shown to 400 women (100 each in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s), after which, impressions of the appearances of these faces were evaluated. The image of the face with a shape change around the eyes evoked significantly more descriptions of “strong will and faith”, “lively and vividly”, “intellect and dignity”, and “plenty of confidence and reliance” compared with the images showing the standard face and that with a shape change around the mouth. A face with a change around the eyes, which were slanting downward and edged with fine wrinkles, was designed to suggest aging using a softened expression; however, the strength of the face’s will was difficult to perceive. This result suggested that eyes convey the strength of the will. The image of the face with a change around the mouth evoked significantly more descriptions, including “I’d like to be close to you” and “happiness” compared with the images showing the standard face or faces with a change in shape around the eyes. These results indicated that changes where the corners of the mouth sagged gave the impression of displeasure, suggesting that the mouth is the part of the face that is most closely associated with feelings of affinity and happiness.
