Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This research aims to develop a method for giving emotions to characters
in digital picture books by using “comic symbols”.Comic symbols are a
set of peculiar representations that appear in comics and are mainly
used to visually express the emotions and/or status of characters.A
characteristic of comic symbols is expression
extendibility.Extendibility refers to strengthening the emotions of
characters in comics and conveying their states more clearly.A user can
give emotions to characters in a picture book by utilizing expression
extendibility. As such, extendibility permits the expression of
complicated emotions, which can be hard to convey via facial expressions
alone. To apply the characteristics of comic symbols to content other
than comics, it is necessary to elucidate the types of comic symbols and
their characteristics. This paper analyzes the meanings and varieties of
comic symbols used in comics as a basic study for developing a method to
give emotions to characters in a picture book.
