Two stages in object-based attentional guidance -- evidence from event-related brain potentials --
Tetsuko Kasai (Hokkaido Univ.)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Attention selects “objects” as the most fundamental unit, which may be achieved through a process where attention automatically spreads within the whole region of an object. The present study examined effects of connectedness (connected/unconnected, thickness of the connecting line) on the attention-spreading over bilateral-stimulus arrays by using event-related brain potentials (ERPs). Directions of attention at the moment were indexed by lateralized potentials that enhanced at the hemisphere contralateral to the attended hemi-field. As a result, electrophysiological effects associated with the attention-spreading were identified in the early phase (150-200 ms post-stimulus) and the later phase (330-390 ms). This indicates that attention is serially guided by hierarchical object representations.
