Recovery Oriented Computing (ROC) is a joint research project of University of California Berkeley and Stanford University in order to realize high available IT system. The author was engaged in a research of microreboot which is one of the core technology of ROC. This paper shows the outline of ROC, and implementation and evaluation of microreboot. A significant fraction of software failures in IT systems are cured by rebooting. Microreboot is a method to reduce downtime of IT system by rebooting only an application component which caused failures. From our experiments, microreboot improves IT system’s availability an order of magnitude better than that of whole application rebooting. |
