Selection of Optimal Null Beamformer Based on Kurtosis Criterion

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We propose a new selection method of optimal null beamformer based on
a kurtosis criterion for fast speech enhancement with small size microphone array.
Many conventional approaches, e.g., delay-and-sum beamformer
and blind source separation, have been proposed for the purpose of
speech enhancement, but these methods cannot achieve a fast speech
enhancement, especially when we use a small size array.
In this study, we introduce a specific property that the kurtosis of the
speech signal becomes a large value. In the proposed method,
we prepare, in advance, the filter set of the null beamformers whose
directional nulls are steered to the various directions, and calculate
each kurtosis for the outputs of the beamformers. It can be assumed
that the maximum kurtosis is observed only when the best noise reduction
and speech enhancement are performed. Therefore, we can determine
the optimal null beamformer by selecting one in that the kurtosis of
the output signal is maximum. In order to investigate the feasibility of
the kurtosis-based criterion for beamformer selection, we analyze the
kurtosis for many types of signals including speech, noise, and mixtures
of both recorded under reverberant conditions. The analysis results show
that the kurtosis of speech takes a large value compared with that of the
various noise signals. Also, the experimental results reveral that
there exists a positive correlation between
the signal separation performance and the kurtosis,
and thus the kurtosis-based criterion can be applicable to
the selection the optimal null beamformer.
