A Study on the Visualization of packet monitoring

With the wide spread of the Internet in recent years and progress of network technology, various networks have been developed. In order to maintenance and manage the network in safety, packet monitoring tools for surveillance and analyzing the network traffic and performance, have played important roles. Although there are existing packet analyzers, such as a Sniffer etc., they are limited to the professional specialists because of its high cost. The packet monitoring tools should be utilized easily to the ordinary network users. Then, there are also some existing free software, such as Ethereal and Epoch Packet Detector, their output formats and functions are based on the text characters and limited. This paper presents the packet visualization method and experimental results of the trial prototyping software. The necessary conditions for realizing packet monitoring are the following three factors; 7 layers communication protocols, packet exchange sequence between nodes and the dynamic packet movement. The prototyping of the packet monitoring software VPM (Visual Packet Monitor) are made and experimented. The evaluation results show the effectiveness of this packet visualization method. |
