The Method to Improve the Resolution of Digital PWM

(in English) Recently, digitization of a controller is progressing for demands of intelligent, common hardware, etc.. In order to control the several converter topologies with common controller, the pulse generator that can generate arbitrary pulse is necessary, and it is realized easily by digitization of PWM generator. However, PWM generator by the digital circuit, a carrier wave turns into a stairs wave. The unit width of this stairs wave is decided with a clock cycle. Therefore, the resolution of PWM output pulse is dependent on the clock cycle. The more switching frequency becomes high, the more this dependability does a bad influence. This causes the very serious problem in digitization of the controller. In this paper, we propose a method to improve the resolution of digital PWM by using pulse composite technique. Furthermore, we manufactured a prototype DC-DC converter with the controller realized by DSP, and it is shown from the experiments that the proposed method is effective.
