Interconnection between Optical-Packet-Multiplexed Networks and Transmission of Optical-Packet-Multiplexed Packets over Existing Long Haul Lines

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) To interconnect optical packet multiplexed networks, which use all the available bandwidth of WDM to transfer each packet, optical packet format (format such as the number of wavelengths, wavelengths, how a packet is distributed to each wavelength) must be identical, or transformation of optical packet formats is necessary. But, it is difficult, if not impossible, to process the transformation optically. Moreover, in general, even with electric processing, huge amount of circuit proportional to square of the number of wavelengths is necessary. However, if data contained in a wavelength after the transformation is contained in a small number of wavelengths before the transformation, electric circuit only proportional to the number of wavelengths is required. Similar circuit is applicable to connect an optical packet multiplexed network to a long haul line. When an optical packet traverses over many stages of all optical data path routers or long haul lines, timing between wavelengths is shifted by dispersion so that the temporal spacing to the next packet is shortened, which makes optical packet switching of all the wavelengths at once impossible. To compensate the shift, inter-wavelength retiming is necessary, which is easy with electric transformation. By having retiming information on several wavelengths, timing shift far greater than a packet length on existing long haul lines with large dispersion can be absorbed. On long haul lines, it is possible to use efficient optical packet formats with no inter-packet spacing, as there is no switching on the lines.
