In a large file server, disk fragmentation curbs file access performance. To improve the performance, a self-defragmentation method, which dissolves the disk fragmentation without changing the existing filesystem, designed for file servers based on IP storage has been developed. To validate the self-defragmentation method, disk access patterns when the disk fragmentation occurs were analyzed by using an file server based on IP storage. The results show that the rate of sequential disk access is an only 5% of total disk accesses because of fine granularity of access unit and mixture of user data and filesystem data accesses. To solve this problem, a multi-step defragmentation method, which groups SCSI commands into access type and then reallocates the data, has been proposed. The performance estimation shows that the sequential disk accesses attains 17% of total accesses by using the proposed method. |
