Communication among Robot and Users Considering Priority of Each User Calculated by Multimodal Information

(in English) Communications among a robot and multiple users should be carried out based on multi-modal information instead of using only the direction of user's face or the distance between each user and a robot. By combining various information about users, a robot can properly select a user with whom it should communicate corresponding to the change of situation. This paper discusses communications among a robot and multiple users based on the calculation of priority of each user using multi-modal information such as the direction of user's face, hand gesture, voice (location of speaker), and the distance between each user and a robot. Priority of each user is calculated at every given time interval, and the user who has the highest priority is chosen by the robot as the communication partner at that time interval. Experimental results for the communications among a real robot and three users are shown to demonstrate the proper selection of user based on the calculated priority.
