On the accuracy of the empirical model for estimating forest biomass from K-distributed SAR images

(in English) In the previous study, an empirical model was developed to estimate forest biomass from the order parameter of K-distributed Pi-SAR images of the Tomakomai forests, in Hokkaido, Japan. The method is based on the empirical relation between the Tomakomai forests and the order parameter of K-distribution of cross-polarization SAR data. To evaluate the accuracy of this algorithm, the ground truth data were collected in Aug. and Sept., 2005. Comparison is made between the biomass collected in 2005 and the biomass estimated by the empirical regression curve derived from the ground-truth data collected in 2002 and 2003. The result shows the measurement accuracy of 85%. It can be concluded that, at least for the Hokkaido forests, this algorithm is a good means of estimating the forest biomass.
