Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) launched Optical Inter-orbit Communications Engineering Test Satellite (OICETS, “Kirari”) on Aug.24, 2005. The main mission of OICETS is to demonstrate the optical inter-satellite communications with ESA’s ARTEMIS satellite on geostationary orbit. After injection to the operational orbit (Altitude: 610km, Circular orbit) , the functional checks of satellite bus and mission subsystem were performed. Through the check out process, we verified OICETS has enough performances to conduct the on-orbit experiments as planed. On Dec.9, 2005, the world first two-way optical inter-satellite communications between OICETS and ARTEMIS was successfully established. We will report and discuss about the functional check and on-orbit experiment results of OICETS. |
