Investigation of operation oerformance of a semiconductor integrated optical digital-to-analog converter

To realize an optical packet switch operating with high speed and low power consumption, we have investigated an optical digital-to-analog converter (ODAC) type label processor that is expected to reduce the power consumption and the number of optical devices. Moreover, the integration of the ODAC on semiconductors is important for downsizing. We have reported preliminarily results of a semiconductor integrated ODAC and achieved 2-bit digital-to-analog conversion performance. However, the phase fluctuation caused by wavelength, polarization and temperature change resulted in output power instability. We estimated the effect of each factors to output signal, and investigated the method of adjusting the phase of a semiconductor ODAC by temperature control. In addition, we also measured the effect of frequency chirping on the performance of an ODAC. |
