Osteoarthritis (OA) which tends to increase in recent years is one of the major diseases that affect the activity of daily life in elder population. It is important to diagnose the early stage of OA to prevent its progression, however, it is difficult to diagnose even with conventional MR imaging because there have been no morphological abnormality in bone and cartilage yet. Invasive techniques, such as biopsy, can be a possible way to detect the early stage of cartilage degeneration, but it is not easy to apply these techniques to patients without sever clinical symptoms. Recently, it has been reported that the diffusion of a contrast agent into degenerated cartilage through a subchondral bone was delayed compared to that into healthy cartilage. Thus, the aim of this study is to establish an MR imaging technique to diagnose the early stage of OA non-invasively by evaluating the diffusion of the contrast agent into cartilage. |
