Visual Artifact Reduction Observed in Lower-Bitrate Video Encoded by Wavelet-Based Coding

Wavelet transform-based coding, like JPEG 2000, has various features such as high coding performance, unified lossless/lossy compression, resolution and SNR scalabilities. However, some visual artifacts produced by quantization appear in lower-bitrate video encoded by wavelet-based coding. It is indispensable to reduce visual artifacts with a flicker because they are visually noticeable. In this paper, we study the method of a spatio-temporal error diffusion to reduce the visual artifacts in video. The error is defined by a difference between an original frame and a decoded frame after quantization and it is diffused to the next frame to improve image quality. We show the validity of the proposed method by experiments. |
