Fabrication of Organic Single-Electron Transistors

We examined the fabrication of single-electron transistors (SETs) with a molecular Coulomb island. The device was consisted of a nanogap electrode, a molecular Coulomb island, and a back gate electrode. The nanogap electrode was fabricated by the electromigration method. The molecule used as the Coulomb island was porphyrin derivative or C$_{60}$. We could obtain the SET characteristics from the electron transport properties of both devices at 11 K. We have not obtained the similar characteristics from control experiments done on the devices without molecules. In addition, the excited states depending on the molecules used in the devices were also observed in the SET characteristics. We thus conclude that the molecular SETs were successfully fabricated. |
