The performance of the alternating-direction implicit FDTD method (ADI-FDTD), the locally one-dimensional FDTD method (LOD-FDTD) and their envelope versions is compared with that of the conventional explicit FDTD for the analysis of optical waveguides. The formulation based on the implicit scheme is presented and an envelope LOD-FDTD is newly developed. A waveguide grating is analyzed as an application to a reflection problem. The performance of each method is investigated in terms of the CPU time and the memory requirement. An optical waveguide with a high reflection coating is also analyzed. Numerical results show that the CPU time of the envelope LOD-FDTD is reduced to about 25% of that of the FDTD, while maintaining comparable accuracy. |
