A /4 microstrip coupled-line coupler suffers from the deterioration of directivity because of the phase velocity difference between the even- and odd-mode due to the inhomogeneous structure. In particular, it becomes remarkable for a loose-coupling coupler. Therefore, various techniques for directivity improvement are suggested. In this paper, a new approach for phase velocities compensation, which utilizes periodic floating-conductors loading on the inner edges of the coupled-line, is presented.
After the design method of a 15-dB coupler is described in detail, 10- and 30-dB couplers are designed. As a result, a high directivity of 20-dB or more is obtained for each coupler without destroying the broadband properties. Moreover, the validity of the present design concept is confirmed by electromagnetic simulations and experiments. This improvement technique is marked by easily realizing high directivity in a fully-planar structure. |
