is advantageous for animals and humans to predict changes in the environment. For example, because there
are latencies in the biological sensory-motor system, preying is difficult without the capability of predicting the motion of its prey. Furthermore, the motion of the prey would be aperiodic due to its instantaneous cognition and its noisy environment. In this difficult situation, preying can be successful if the rule governing the running-away is available. In connection with this example, this study aims at investigating predictive ability of humans with saccades for a moving visual target which is intermittently presented. The target was presented at a constant interval which was set properly for avoiding apparent motion perception and for permitting unconscious prediction. We used a 1st-order or 2nd-order AR process as the target time-seriesin order to make the time-series aperiodic, and thus the periodic-pattern-based (memory-based) approach was unsuccessful. In addition, we used random time-series for control experiments. that the random time-series was generated based on the AR-process and have the same statistics with the original AR-process. Results suggest the subjects performed quasi-optimal prediction of the AR process. |
