A role of equalizing ear canal transfer function for high fidelity sound localization

It is well known that the transfer functions for headphone-based virtual sound reproduction depend on the listener; they are the head-related transfer functions (HRTFs) and ear-canal transfer functions (ECTFs).
While there are several studies on HRTFs, the studies on the sound localization of ECTFs have not been adequate.
To remedy this omission we conduct a localization test to examine the impact of equalizing ECTFs.
The results show that the localization of the sound images reproduced with this equalization approaches that of actual loudspeakers better than is possible without this equalization.
This confirms that individual ECTFs are required for high fidelity sound localization. |
