Face Recognition Based on Hidden Markov Eigenface Model

This paper proposes Hidden Markov Eigenface Models (HMEMs) in which the eigenfaces are integrated into separable lattice hidden Markov models (SL-HMMs). In many face recognition systems such as the eigenfaces, the
variations in location and size of faces are assumed to be normalized prior to training and testing. On the other hand, SL-HMMs have been proposed as a probabilistic model in which the normalization processes is included in the model structure. The proposed model has good properties of both the eigenface method and SL-HMMs: a linear feature extraction and invariances to size and location. We derive a training algorithm for HMEMs based on the variational EM algorithm and evaluate the effectiveness of HMEMs in face recognition experiments. Moreover, we apply the Deterministic Annealing EM algorithm to improve the training algorithm. |
