In usual performance evaluations of
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Avoidance
(CSMA/CA),
probabilities of carrier detection and data reception
are modeled to be a discontinuous function changing
from $0\%$ to $100\%$ at a certain transmitter-receiver distance.
In real systems, however, these probabilities change
continuously against the receiver-transmitter distance
even with the same average received CNR (Carrier-to-Noise Ratio) or CINR
(Carrier-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio) due to the thermal noise or fading.
In this paper, we have studied the throughput of wireless ad hoc networks
taking account of the continuous carrier detection probability and the data
reception probability.
Analytical results indicate that,
considering the above mentioned
continuous probabilities,
more than one problem such as hidden terminal or exposed terminal
arise and decrease the system throughput,
whereas only one problem decreases it in the analysis without
assuming these probabilities.
The analytical results are verified by a comparison of
results from computer simulations assuming IEEE 802.11a protocol.
Through network simulations,
we also show that a routing algorithm can decrease network delay
by taking the quality of wireless links into account
especially when these continuous probabilities are assumed. |
