When LN(LiNbO3)modulators are used in an ultra-fast optical transmitter, it is necessary to control the bias voltage in order to suppress the waveform distortion due to drift of the extinction characteristics. In non-return-to-zero (NRZ) scheme, a general monitoring technique for the optimum bias voltage is to maximize the forward output power from the modulator. On the other hand, in the case of carrier-suppressed return-to-zero(CSRZ) signal, which is one of the modulation formats for high-speed long distance transmission, the forward output power depends on the driving amplitude, therefore, the control sensitivity would be reduced. In this paper, we propose a novel bias control technique for CSRZ transmitter using backward-traveling light, and investigate dependence of the driving amplitude. And we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method with the experiment of 10-Gbit/s CSRZ signal. |
