This paper proposes a signal detection algorithm which approximately performs the maximum likelihood detection (MLD) by employing linear detection and a Monte Carlo method for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. Although MLD is the optimal signal detection for the MIMO system,MLD requires an enormously large amount of computational complexity that exponentially increases with both the number of data streams and that of constellations. On the other hand, the linear detection of which complexity is almost proportional to the square of the number of data streams cannot achieve sufficient bit error rate (BER) performance owing to the noise enhancement.
Thus, this paper proposes a detection algorithm that can achieve sufficient BER while requiring much less complexity than MLD. The proposed scheme finds signal candidates by properly moving an output of the linear detection in the direction of the noise enhancement and performing hard decision of the results, and then selects the candidate having the largest likelihood function. Computer simulations with $4\times4$ MIMO and 16QAM demonstrate that the proposed method requires 17 dB less $E_b/N_0$ than the minimum mean squared error (MMSE) and 5 dB more $E_b/N_0$ than MLD in order to achieve BER of $10^{-4}$, while reducing the complexity to about 0.36\% of the MLD's one. |
