CT Colonography and CAD

Computed tomographic colonography (CTC), also known as virtual colonoscopy, is an emerging alternative technique for screening of colon cancers. Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) for CTC automatically determines the locations of suspicious polyps in CTC and presents them to radiologists, typically as a second opinion. Despite its relatively short history, CAD has become one of the mainstream techniques for the detection of polyps, demonstrating the potential to bring CTC to prime time for screening of colorectal cancer. However, as tagging of stool and fluid by an oral contrast agent as well as reduced bowel cleansing become widely used in CTC, CAD is facing a new challenge of detecting polyps submerged or partially covered by the tagged fecal materials. This lecture reviews the recent progress and the new challenges of CAD for CTC. |
