The Lambda Utility Project is one of the R&D projects of photonic networks, which have been launched in 2006 under the financial support of an agency of the Japanese government, the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT). The project member organizations are NEC Corporation, Osaka University, Fujitsu Limited, Mitsubishi Electric Corporation and Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. The project performs technical development which realizes the terabit-class LAN environment over wide area networks, cooperating with the Lambda Access Project. This technology will enable each end-user to enjoy stress-free 100Gbps-class bidirectional communication with various services, such as a super high definition video conference, GRID computing, and so on. The Lambda Utility Project, focusing on wide area network technologies, includes the following three development themes; Theme 1: Borderless optical path control and management technology, Theme 2: High-spectral-efficient link transmission technology and Theme 3: Modulation-format-free optical 3R technology. The Lambda Utility Project cooperates with the Lambda Access Project, and those two projects will conduct the interoperability experiment for realizing a terabit-class LAN over wide area networks. |
