Optimality Study of Single-Hop WDM Networks with Multicast Traffic Noriaki Kamiyama (NTT) PN2006-98 |

It is difficult to realize an optical packet switch because it needs an optical memory with large capacity. A single-hop WDM network using a passive optical device, i.e., a star coupler (SC) or an arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG), at hub node needs no switching operation, so this is a desirable architecture to realize an all-optical packet network in LAN or MAN. Especially, we can expect an improvement of throughput in the AWG-based one because of the cyclic-frequency property of the AWG. Assuming unicast traffic, the author compared five single-hop WDM architectures and investigated the optimum ones in the LAN or MAN environment respectively. However, it is anticipated that the SC-based architecture is suited for accommodating multicast traffic. So, in this paper, we compare the five architectures and find the optimum ones when multicast traffic is mixed. |
