In optical packet switching, a packet contention occurs when two or more packets are output to a same output port at the same time. One of contention resolution techniques, using FDL as a buffer is widely used because practical optical RAM technology has not been available. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of contention resolution mechanism that uses FDL buffer in a multi-wavelength optical packet switch which forwards a multi-wavelength packet consisting of a label encoded into a wavelength and a payload encoded into different wavelengths. Through simulation, we show that the relation between buffer depth, FDL length and packet loss probability, delay for contention resoluton upon actual international traffic data. Our simulation result show that the contention resolution performance on the actual traffic data is higher than that of the Poisson process model traffic, even if the number of FDLs is less. |
