About 15 Years of Our Character Recognition Business

It was 15 years ago (1990) when I made a start on studies and commercialization of Character Recognition technologies at Media Drive Corporation ( ex- Media Drive Laboratory Inc.). At first, in parallel with Character Recognition,
I planned to promote research and development on a new PC using those CPUs and CG technologies which seemed to start rapid evolution, Car Navigation System, Medical Expert System, Voice Recognition etc. at that time. However, the economic bubble burst occurred in 1991 made us difficult in further investment for new technologies and obliged us to focus on R&D in regard with Character Recognition related technologies. Having expected significant advance in PC performance, we intended to develop all of our software products only on and for PCs. The first commercial product, thus completed taking one and a half year for its development was a Document OCR software "MacReader Japan for Macintosh PC". Since then, we have been devoting our efforts for study, research, development and commercialization of Character Recognition and Cross Media Retrieval related products for over 15 years. In this report, by reviewing the days contended with Character Recognition business for 15-year, I would like to introduce our strategies for products commercialization that we have ever taken, episodes, reminder and some others for your reference. |
