Slip-related falls occur frequently in snowy regions. Injuries, damages, and the lack of exercise are serious problems. We applied the method of Nordic walking ( NW ) to the safety walk on a frozen surface. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the effect of the fall-avoidance and to elucidate its mechanism. The gait stability and the effectiveness of fall-avoidance were parameterized using the velocity and the position of the center of mass relative to the base of support. Translational disturbance was given, and the results in ordinary walking and Nordic walking are compared. Gait stability for forward disturbance was higher in NW than ordinary walking. It was confirmed that poles were effective to avoid falls in the inward disturbance, as well. Through this study, the effectiveness of NW for fall-avoidance was verified in quantitative analysis of walking. |
