Critical Scale: Concept and Applications

A finite spatial dataset provides spatial information with probabilistic ambiguity. We introduce the concept of `critical scale', the threshold of spatial resolution above which the dataset is informative and under which pattern analyses lose statistical significance. This concept is derived from a scale-space paradigm applied to an estimation of geometric properties provided by the spatial dataset, since its randomness at microscopic scales is smoothed out at macroscopic scales. We present an approach to the detection of statistically valid properties above the critical scale on the basis of lifetime analysis. We also discuss possible applications such as data clustering and image segmentation. |
