Study of Image Contrast Enhancement Based on Shadow and Non-shadow Area

Image enhancement, especially color image enhancement is a critical area in image processing research. Image contrast enhancement is to enhance the contrast of color image so as to make the image more vivid and beautiful. The shadow is an essential part of color images but its features are different from non-shadow area so that the processing of shadow and non-shadow areas should also be different. We identify shadow areas by a shadow detection method and segment the color image into shadow areas and non-shadow areas. Then, histogram equalization is applied to shadow areas, and Reverse-S-Shape transform is applied to non-shadow areas so that the contrast of the color image is enhanced. Experimental results show that our proposed method based on shadow and non-shadow area can successfully enhance color images. |
