INDEX is small, advanced scientific satellite for aurora observation in use of 3-axis attitude control with accuracy 0.05°. In order to realize the unique scientific observation by means of small satellite with 72Kg weight, advanced satellite technologies are applied to the development, including integrated control with high-performance processor, solar-concentrated paddles with thin film reflectors, lithium-ion batteries with high energy density, and tiny GPS receivers. The development team consists of young staff of space agency, students and active venture companies. Development of INDEX is very effective to stimulate advanced satellite technologies. The total cost is about US$4M excluding JAXA personal salary and launch cost. INDEX was launched at Aug. 2005 by Dnepr rocket. INDEX has being operated perfectly in orbit for more than one years. |
