Effective Management of Output Buffer Type Optical Switch by Over-Size Packet Accepting Write-In controll

(in English) High-performance system design technologies as well as high-speed and high-reliability technologies are required for development of all optical packet switch for future networks. Traffic design gives fundamental materials for design of switching systems, however, sufficient materials based on variable length packet switching have not been collected yet. The subjects of this paper are to present characteristic analyses by simulation for variable length packet switching, and to consider appropriate packet accepting and transferring procedures. A switch type discussed here is an output buffer type and a memory in the switch is configured with electric or all optical systems. As a novel packet accepting write-in procedure, a method that one over-size packet which is larger than a free buffer size can be accepted at a time is presented, and the characteristics of the novel procedure is compared with a conventional procedure in which a packet smaller than a free buffer size only are accepted. Furthermore a concept of data loss probability is also introduced as a new performance parameter.
