Reliable Multicast with ARQ and FEC for HDTV streaming

(in English) IP multicast enables delivery of video and audio to numerous users at the same time. The quality of video and audio at a receiver is subject to a significant degradation as the result of packet loss. In order to overcome the influence of packet loss, an application- layer FEC technique is often used in streaming applications. In FEC, parity packets are invariably received. These parity packets are never used if all packets are correctly received. This causes inefficiency using FEC on networks where packets are not often lost. To reduce the traffic of unnecessary parity packets, a new application-layer error correction mechanism based on layered multicast and ARQ has developed. In this paper, we propose a protocol. In proposed protocol, parity packets are partitioned into fundamental and supplementary parity packets and are sent as separate multicast sessions. They are used in combination with ARQ. By the use of this mechanism, supplementary parity packets are only received by receivers suffering from severe packet loss. The effectiveness of proposed reliable multicast protocol is examined by the experiment of streaming HDTV over a commercial IP network. The results of this experiment show that the proposed protocol effectively recovers lost packets.
