Phase Noise-Tolerance Characteristics of M-QAM Signals in Homodyne Detection using a Polarization-multiplexed Pilot Carrier

(in English) We investigated the phase noise-tolerance in our proposed multi-level homodyne detection using a pilot carrier orthogonally multiplexed with respect to QPSK or QAM optical signals by a computer simulation. It is necessary to estimate the bit error rate (BER) using the received data value and a limited number of symbols in a computer simulation. For a multi-level decision, the bit error rate estimation method was proposed and verified. We considered how DGD (Differential Group Delay) would affect to the homodyne scheme in a case where DGD became identical with propagation delay time difference between the QAM optical signal and the pilot carrier. In the results, we confirmed that the proposed detection is expected to provide prominent phase noise tolerance even with such DGD condition.
