Wavelength dependence of photo-elastic constant of various silica fibers

(in English) In parallel optical fiber transmission systems, non-uniform stress causes skew in a fiber ribbon under practical environments. It is important to determine the photo-elastic constant for evaluating the skew values. In this paper, stress-induced group delay variations in the visible wavelength were newly measured. Combined with the previously reported data using fibers, stress-induced group delay variations in a wide wavelength range of 0.4 μm~1.7μm are summarized. Using the measured data, we report the evaluated photo-elastic constants of silica fibers. Besides the ordinary single-mode and graded-index multimode fibers, stress-induced group delay variations were measured using holey fibers with 6- and 12 holes. The measured results and the comparison between them are also reported.
