The blood supply of the human dermis is due to a microcirculatory bed including arterioles, capillaries and venules. In the microcirculatory bed, there are too many anatomical and topographical peculiarities depending on the skin areas such as the face, finger and nail bed. Thus, it might be very useful to develop a visualization system of subcutaneous blood vessels in various skin areas. In the present study, the feasibility of such a system named capillary scope system was investigated. The capillary scope system consisted of a convex lens, a charge coupled device (CCD) camera, four light emitting diodes (LEDs) with the wavelength of about 530 nm and a personal computer. The lens and CCD camera were housed in a handy-size plastic tube (diameter: 2 cm; height: 10 cm) so that the capillary scope system can be easily applicable to various skin areas. The distance between the lens and the CCD camera was changed manually to adjust the focus. The LEDs were arranged every 90 degrees on the circumference of the tube and used to illuminate the subcutaneous blood vessels indirectly through the skin. The tube was gently placed on a skin via mineral oil, and monochrome signals from the CCD camera were fed into the computer via a capture board and stored on a hard disk continuously. A custom-made software developed in our laboratory displayed simultaneously the original, noise-reduced and binary images of subcutaneous blood vessels on a computer screen off-line. The software also made it possible to measure the diameter and length of blood vessels. The results obtained in the present study indicate that it is feasible to visualize subcutaneous blood vessels in various skin areas using this system, and suggest that the capillary scope system is available as a useful tool in the skin-care field as well as medical field. |
