GPU-Accelerated Volume Reconstruction for Cone-Bean CT

(in English) Volume reconstruction for cone-beam CT (computed tomography)
is a process which reconstructs 3-D (three dimensional) volume data
from multiple 2-D (two dimensional) image data.
The complexity of this process is given by $O(N^3)$,
where $N$ represents the number of voxels on the side of volume.
Thus, the computational amount is large for high-resolution volume,
so that one challenging issue is to achieve shorter execution time for
reconstruction.
This paper presents a method for accelerating backprojection procedure
using the GPU (graphics processing unit).
Our method decomposes the volume into slices such that each slice can
be processed in parallel on the GPU.
The experimental results show that our GPU-based method reconstructs a
volume of $N=512$ in approximately 17 seconds,
whereas an SSE-accelerated CPU method takes about 75 seconds.
