Wideband Measurement of Discharge Current through Fingertip from Charged Human-body

(in English) Immunity testing for human electrostatic discharge (ESD) is being prescribed in IEC 61000-4-2, in which an ESD-gun is used to inject into a device under test the discharge current through a lumped resistor from a charged lumped capacitor. In actual ESD events from a charged human body, however, charges distributed on the body surface can be discharged through a spark from his/her fingertip, and therefore its situation should essentially be different from that of the ESD gun. To grasp the behavior of the discharge current due to human ESDs, using a 12GHz digital oscilloscope we measured discharge currents through a 50- SMA connector from the fingertip of a charged human body with respect to charge voltages from 300V to 3kV. We first gave a method for measuring a transfer impedance of the measurement system in order to estimate the discharge current injected on the SMA connector from the fingertip, and then showed how charge voltages affect the growth of fingertip discharges. The dependence on charge voltages of discharge currents was also demonstrated.
