Relationship between arc duration and motion of arc spots for break arcs of Ag and Ag/ZnO electrical contacts

(in English) Break arcs are generated in a DC 42V-10A resistive circuit. The contact material is Ag or Ag/ZnO. Dependence of arc duration on the number of break operations is investigated for each contact material. The number of operation is 200. The motion of the arc spots is observed with a high-speed camera. The following results are shown. For Ag/ZnO contacts, the arc duration changed irregularly to short (59ms) or long (69ms) arc-duration. Arc spots move widely on contact surfaces for the cases of short arc-duration, and move small for the cases of long arc-duration. The cause is supposed that the porous structure on the contact surface caused by the difference of the boiling points of Ag and ZnO.
